The
Encyclopedia of Rap and Hip Hop Culture
(Greenwood Press, 2005)
Although Hip Hop is more than thirty years old, The
Encyclopedia of Rap and Hip Hop Culture is the first
comprehensive reference book to document the history of
rap music and Hip Hop in the United States. Hip Hop is
comprised of four art forms: MC'ing (rapping), B-boying
(breakdancing), Deejaying (music) and Graffiti (visual
art). The encyclopedia examines all four elements through
its approx. 500 entries and 100 photographs, discographies
after entries and a "for further listing" list at the
end of the volume. Greenwood Press is a well respected
publisher of reference books on the subjects of popular
culture, literature, social science and history.
Praise for The Encyclopedia of Rap
and Hip Hop Culture:
"This encyclopedia should fill
a void by providing a commanding single volume guide
of value to those unfamiliar with hip-hop culture or
those who like the culture or music but are unfamiliar
with its origins and development. The work examines the
four manifestations of hip-hop culture---DJ, MC, B-boy
and graffiti and the 30 year history of the music genre.
The more than 400 mostly biographical entries range in
length from a couple fo sentences for lesser artists
or concepts to several pages for prominent figures. Bynoe's
writing is clear and concise, and her knowledge of the
topic is obvious. Her work should make a good addition
to public and academic library collections."
-----Library
Journal, December 15, 2006
"This work will be a useful resource for students of music and culture at the outset of research. Recommended for undergraduate and public libraries."
-----College & Research Libraries, September 2006
"This is a well-written, informative encyclopedia that would sit well on any
bookshelf and will appeal to readers of all ages."
-----Reference Reviews, October 2006
"[B]ynoe chronicles the history and influence of hip-hop via approximately
450 entries, mostly biographical, with a good representation of both East Coast
and West Coast personalities....Bynoe's guide is an essential acquisition for
all music collections....Recommended for all public and academic libraries."
-----MultiCultural Review, Fall 2006
"A great addition to muisc and cultural reference collections."
----Booklist/Reference Books Bulletin, June 2006
"This volume provides students scholars, and music fans with a complete history of the 30 year old musical genre. Concise yet comprehensive, the entries range from profiles on legendary performers to topics such as sampling, censorship, and tagging."
